The theme

Beyond five:creating Africa’snext big story

Five years ago Bloom was an idea and a group chat. Today it is a team, a body of work, and a stake in what African media becomes next. That is worth marking properly.

So we are not sitting down to dinner this year. We are lacing up. Same game, different court — the same people, the same appetite for winning, moved onto a field where everybody starts level and nobody gets to hide behind a job title.

One day. Four teams. Nine events. Whoever leaves with the trophy leaves with a year of bragging rights, and the rest of us leave with the only thing that ever really mattered here: the story we tell about it afterwards.

“Beyond five is not a birthday. It is a starting gun.”

The line-up

Nine waysto win it

Every event carries points toward one leaderboard. Turn up for one, turn up for all nine — but the team that spreads itself widest usually lifts the trophy.

  • 01Field

    5-a-Side Football

The headline event. Group stage into knockouts, ninety seconds of extra time and no VAR.

  • 02Court

    Basketball 3x3

Half court, first to 21. Short games, long memories.

  • 03Track

    4x100m Relay

Four legs, one baton. Departments have lost friendships over less.

  • 04Indoor

    Table Tennis

Singles and doubles. The quiet ones usually win this.

  • 05Court

    Volleyball

Best of three sets, mixed teams, everybody rotates.

  • 06Field

    Tug of War

Eight a side. Pure leverage and stubbornness.

  • 07Mind

    Chess

Rapid format, ten minutes each. Same game, different court.

  • 08Screen

    FIFA / eFootball

Console bracket running all day in the shade.

  • 09Everyone

    The Fun Round

Sack race, three-legged sprint and a lime-and-spoon dash. Compulsory joy.
